The hippie movement is a subculture began its
development as a youth movement in the United States during the early 1960s and
European social movements in the 19th and early 20th century such as Bohemians,
and the influence of Eastern religion and spirituality.

Opened on Jan. 3, 1966, by brothers Ron and Jay Thelin and selling psychedelic
books and posters, hippie clothing, and drug paraphernalia, this head shop
quickly became a gathering place for the burgeoning counterculture. It
closed in October 1967.
